Greenwich Yacht Club

February/March 2006 Newsletter

Hi Folks,

Well anyone who didn’t get to see “The One-Eyed Telescope” in late January should be kicking themselves. It was a terrific couple of nights. The audience seemed to enjoy themselves, and the cast certainly had a great time. A full (and ecstatic) review from Brian Gillespie, and pictures, will be in the next edition of Trident.

GYC AGM

The main item to remind all full single and full family members about this month is the AGM.  It’s at 11.00 a.m.  this Sunday 12th February in the Landside Building. If you are a full member you should have had your agenda and minutes of last year by now. If not please contact Frank Lerner, current Hon. Sec. at frank.lerner@btinternet.com.

Frank Lerner

(By the way if you’re not a full member yet, and you have been in the club for over a year, why not think about applying for full membership and play a part in the running of the club? It’s easy. Just write a letter for the membership secretary to bring to the committee stating what club activities you have been involved in, to do with sailing or the river. We’ll do the rest.)

Cruiser Racing

The February and March dates for the Winter Series are going to have
to change, as they clash with other scheduled events. The February
race will now have to be on SATURDAY the 25th, start time 10.30, race briefing 0930. This is because of the AGM on the 12th. Please ignore my earlier posting saying the race was on 19th.

Usual “round the cans” course off the Club. Sorry for any confusion.

The  March Winter Series race will be on SUNDAY the 26th, start time 11.30 (don't forget the clocks will have gone forward). This is because the Frostbite Race is on March 11th/12th. The Frostbite is an annual fixture for all Thames Cruisers over two days, Limehouse to Erith on Sat, then back on Sun. GYC won the coveted Frostbite Trophy last year, so we have got to turn out to defend it.
Caroline V was lifted out the other day for polishing. Sadly no underwater excrescences were discovered to account for our poor performance
recently which leaves me with the distressing realisation that I've
been sailing badly! (Curses). Still, I suppose it helps the handicap.
And on that note, I'd like to post a heartfelt vote of thanks to all
those unsung heroes who turn out to help when we lift our boats out.
It makes it all so much more comforting to have you guys around on the
day. Many thanks to you all. Geoff Williams and I have now finalised the 2006 sailing programme and we'll post this shortly. See you all at the AGM .
Lionel Willis, Cruiser Captain

And still on the more social side of the club……

Bird Fanciers unite!

Jim Four has arranged for a member of the RSPB to come and give GYC members and their friends a talk as an introduction to birds you might find on our river. This promises to be fascinating. It’s a free event to members, although donations to the RSPB on the day will be welcome. Catch it on:

Sunday morning 5th March @ 1100 hours in the Landside Building.

ALSO….

Jim Four and Carla Pengilly are looking to arrange a Games Evening again towards the end of March. Keep an eye on the notice boards for a firm date. These evenings are terrific fun, and sure do beat staying in and watching the telly.

Knot for the Fainthearted (sorry)

Are you hot at knots? Or are you hopeless at them? Vi Matthews and Harry Gingell would like to bring both sets of you together on a Tuesday evening, to teach new members and sailors the 6 basic knots any sailor needs. Starting next Tuesday, we’ll provide the string.

VHF Classes

Saturday March 11th 2006                        Saturday May13th 2006

All classes start at 0930 hours in the classroom.

If you would like to book a course, see Ray Wheatley on Tuesday evenings at the club or phone him on 020 8856 6655

Work Party dates

Disillusioned by the sight of a dirty tearoom?

Distressed by the slippery slipway?

Disgusted by bird poo on balcony banisters?

Depressed by the lack of a view out of the dirty clubhouse windows? YES?

Well YOU can do something about it and change society for the better.

“How?” you may ask

That’s easy to answer.

JOIN THE REVOLUTIONARY WORK PARTY

Yes, my Brothers and Sisters, join your Comrades on the path to social

justice for all members.

Next revolutionary meeting is Saturday 25th February 2006

at 09.00 outside the tearoom.

Comrade Damon will hand out weapons (mostly sponges, brooms and brushes) and

give you your tasks.

BECOME A HERO OF THE REVOLUTION (AND GET A NICE CLEAN CLUB AT THE SAME TIME, AND A BREAKFAST AT A VERY REASONABLE PRICE)

If you miss that date, you can still join the revolution on

Saturday 25th March or Saturday 22nd April 2006

Damon Rowley

And for those of you who aren’t getting this via the Yahoo Group…………..

Don’t forget the Yahoo Group, if you want to get in touch with a number of members quickly.

The GYC Forum is a Yahoo Group which has been created for club members. A Yahoo group is a free forum service offered byYahoo that enables people who have a common interest to share information. Ours was set up by member Terry Naude (who also runs the web site. He’s on terry.home@home-it.com.) to help improve communication between members.  All you need to do is click on http://groups.yahoo.com/group/greenwichYC while connected to the internet.

Finally, the next edition of Trident should come out in late April or early May. So it’s time to get writing. Send stuff to me at ray_carol@tiscali.co.uk or come and find me on most Tuesday nights at the club.

If it’s something really embarrassing we can always publish it anonymously.
