The RNSA trophy on the 8/5/05 saw some exciting sailing in testing conditions with the lead changing hands on every lap. The trophy went to myself & Fiona, just beating Jay Prehn & crew by 12 seconds, after he had capsized at least  twice and nearly lost his crew along with everyone

else, unlucky or well done Jay?

The travellers trophy  at GYC on 22/5/05 saw a 29 boat start in good winds over a long course, with all GYC boats coming in the first 15 (see notice board /web site for results). The whole event was a great day for the club, the organisation from car parking /slipway/food & bar was excellent - a big thanks to everyone who got involved on land & water, a special thanks to safety boat crews /race hut staff and OODs Lionel Willis /Mick Mitchell and sailors. Erith Yacht Club leg of the TT is on Sunday 12th June - 1pm start - all GYC members are welcome so come along and support your club.

The Tuesday evening race was well contested with 9 dinghies out, James Eastwood seemed to lap most boats over 4 laps and took the trophy. Congratulations to James. Three open days are planned this season for

new/novice members to go out in dinghies, one being a trip to EYC and back, competent helms and safety  boat crews will be needed for these days. Nikki Prehn will be advertising the dates on the notice board soon.

Re-run of the Mayor’s Trophy will be on Saturday 3/9/05, times will be on the notice board soon. The day after is the Commodore’s Jubilee Cup, could be interesting for those going for the Summer Series points cup! Would all dinghy sailors keep an eye on the cruiser race programme sheet on the notice board  or web site, as dinghy sailors start cruiser races and

vice versa. Every one on form on Sunday the 12th @ EYC or as Nick Fossey would say "the barrier and beyond".

On Saturday 2/7/05 there is an open day at GYC for new members/novices to go out in dinghies or cruisers, forms will be on the notice board soon. Also there are lots of other events going on that day so come along and join in. Sunday 3/7/05 GYC& EYC are holding a open Bosun meeting at GYC - 40 boat start ! So lets see lots of members getting involved.

Social Stuff…

The Bar…will be open on Friday evenings from 1900hrs. There is one exception -–Friday, June 24th when it has been booked for a private function.

Several people have asked me about the next Sing around Evening. It has made me wonder whether there is enough interest to have an occasional Acoustic Evening at the club where people could come and sing or play. Perhaps a Friday evening might be an idea – now that the Bar is open then. If you are keen to take part in this please contact me or see Pat Mayhew and let her know your views…

News from the Rowing Section

The rowers have been very active since the last newsletter and have achieved the remarkable feat of rowing from Greenwich to Richmond and back again over one tide. A total of 9 hours 39 minutes were spent on the water and two members of the crew rowed all the way there and all the way back, with one 40 minute break at Richmond.  A huge amount of money was raised for charity for those being sponsored. The Richmond Boatyard kindly enough provided moorings at Richmond for Great Harry and the support boats. Andy Pledger and Pat Mayhew also arranged a money raising disco in the evening which was very well attended and raised money for both the club’s centenary fund and the RNLI.

Since that epic feat on May 7th we have also rowed to Erith and back and also up into the centre of the City and back.

We are hoping to put on a race between Great Harry and Great Southeastern during the GYC regatta on 2nd July. Anyone hoping to take part in the Great River Race this year, must pay their entry fee of £25.00 to me by the 30th June. This is because the entry fee goes up to £28.00/head after 15 July and I need to get the money in before I can make the application. It looks like we shall have fewer places available this year, so if you want to take part see me soon. Cheques should be made payable to Greenwich Yacht Club Ltd.

Practice sessions are held every weekend and anyone is welcome. If you like the idea of rowing in this year’s race but haven’t had a go yet I recommend that you attend a practice session this month. Dates and times are displayed in the club and in last months Newsletter. We are also holding a rowing work party on Saturday June 18th to prepare Araby for the race and practice sessions.

Work Party

The next club work party is on June 25th at 9.30 am. The last work party was well attended, especially considering that it was a bank holiday weekend, half the cruiser fleet and most of the motor boats were away for the weekend. It was a warm sunny day and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.

The next party is timed to coincide with a beach clearance by Thames 21. We shall also be clearing up the yard and making preparations for the Regatta the following week, as well as the usual necessary chores such as cleaning the slipway and cleaning bird droppings off the banisters.

All members are reminded that a condition of membership is that you give up two days a year for the club. Work parties which are held on the last Saturday of the month are the best way of achieving this. They are also a good way to meet other members.

I hope to see as many as possible of you on the 25th. Just turn up at 9.30 outside the tea room where I shall delegate a task to you. Don’t come in your Sunday Best!

Courses

All of the people who attended Jeremy Fox’s Celestial Navigation Course would like to take this opportunity of thanking him for all the tremendous effort he put in to helping us understand the magic of the Art! His patience and forbearance in the face of a rather mixed-ability group of students were second to none!

Thank you Jeremy!

There will be two Day Skipper Courses and one Yachtmaster Theory Course next year.

See Brian Harrison in the club on Tuesdays for full details. Times and dates and further details will appear in future Newsletters.

Getting Out on the Water Julie Coleclough writes:

I'm arranging the following charters which may be of interest to GYC  members who are not boat owners or who wish to try a different sailing area. To register your interest, drop me an email (julie_coleclough@hotmail.com) or see me at the club.

Cheers, Julie.

Other news…

There will be a visit of the Viking Ship Gaia to Woolwich -10 – 14 August 2005. This replica ship is due to sail from Sandefjord Norway, and visit Kirkwall, Peel, Dublin, Wexford and London this summer. There is a website www.gaia.no which gives details (in English) as they become available. Perhaps we can invite the crew to visit GYC?

Regatta (2nd & 3rd of July)

If people could print off posters (ask Damon) and put it up in their workplaces or children’s schools local to the club. Damon is also looking for more volunteers to help out, especially on the day.

New Yachts Flying the GYC Burgee…

John and Elena Cunningham took delivery of ‘Clorinda’ in Slovenia in April and sailed her down to her new home in Levkas, Greece. "Clorinda"- one of the muses in Greek mythology - is a Bavaria 38 Cruiser and is named after Elena's mother.

Nick and Tanya Fossey own ‘Hobo’ – a Hanse 301 - and judging by her performance in the Bob Walker Cup on Sunday they will keep us all on our toes! They are planning to sail her across the Channel this summer.
