Greenwich Yacht
Club News Letter April 2005
News from the Cruiser
Section
The month has kicked-off to a great start; a brilliant
sun-kissed Sunday saw the end of the winter series (finally) when an encouraging eight boats came to the line, with factor 15 being more the order
of the day than thermals. A close tussle saw Mick Mitchell, the wily fox,
clinching the winter series trophy closely pursued by Flying Free, a picture repeated in overall results. Congratulations
to Mick and Ariadne, it's amazing
what you can achieve without antifouling!
Thanks to Jay for the results analysis
which I've posted below:

The Mayor’s Trophy, 10/4/05
Another sunny day for yacht racing, hopefully a trend for
2005, with a magnificent 11 boats turning out to compete for the trophy first
awarded by the Mayor of Greenwich when the Club first moved to the old site and
the Tideway Sailing Centre opened. Sadly, five boats did not manage to complete
the course and the blame does rest with your Cruiser Captain, who should have
plotted the likely race time based on the slower, rather than the faster boat.
Mea Culpa, I'll try harder next time.
Results in order, with
elapsed time and handicap:
1. Elan Rua, 1.31.29

Congratulations to Steve, well done for using the famous GYC
formula for success, i.e. get a dinghy
sailor onboard!
We have a weekend off to allow the footsloggers to go by,
but if anyone is around on the 17th, the Sea Rangers (who will be
providing succour to the runners from the roadside) would love to go out on a
boat to reconnect themselves to the true realities.
Next race will be
SATURDAY the 23rd April, the Meridian Trophy (so called because it
has to cross the Meridian Line) not so far as Deptford Creek, the race goes
round the Driftwood Barge off the Trafalgar Tavern. An easier passage and a
chance to swank to the boozers as you go by! See you there
Check out the
notice board in the Club for updates and results. You could be up there.

Rowing
The
GYC rowers have got off to a good start this year and we have already completed
three sessions, one up to Tower Bridge one up Deptford Creek and two up Bow
Creek, the last one as far as Hackney Marsh.
On
the 7th May we are planning a charity row up the River to Richmond
and back on the same day, a distance of approximately 50 miles!! Before that we
have two more practice sessions on the 23rd April, hopefully up to
Tower Bridge and back and 1st May to Erith and back.
We
shall have to start getting people to commit to the Great River Race soon so
that we have a good idea of numbers to be involved this year.
If
you want more information about the Great River Race or any of the rowing
activities in the club, come to our meeting in the boardroom under the bar area
next Tuesday at 8.30 (you can bring your pint with you) or email me at damon.rowley@am-partnership.com
or phone 07815 764 152.
Hope
to see you next Tuesday.

The GYC Forum
The GYC forum is a Yahoogroup which has been created for club members to use for whatever purposes the members feel will bebeneficial for the club. A Yahoogroup is a free Forum service offered by Yahoo that enables people to share information with others who have the same interest. There is no charge for the service although commercials are added to the bottom of emails. It was set up at the end of April 04 by Terry Naude to help improve communications between club members by providing a space on the internet for posting views, asking questions and sharing information (e.g. race results) including pictures. It’s an ideal way of keeping in touch when away from the Clubhouse. Terry (terry.home@home-it.com) is the owner and moderator of the GYC Forum. He will answer any queries you have about joining the GYC Forum and will ensure that any content posted to the forum is in keeping with the purpose stated above. Other trusted members of the GYC Forum will be allocated moderator privileges to allow them to co-moderate in Terry’s absence. Membership of the GYC forum is not automatic. It’s your choice and we recommend that you take advantage of this facility. To join the GYC Forum click on http://groups.yahoo.com/group/GreenwichYC whilst connected to the internet. You can also join by sending a blank email to GreenwichYC-subscribe@yahoogroups.com Follow the on screen instructions to join. If you are not already a member of Yahoo, you will need to register with Yahoo first before signing up to the GYC forum. Note it is important to remember your password as you will not get in if you forget this. Any mails sent to the GYC Forum will automatically be distributed to all the people who have joined the group. If you know of other members of the club who are not included on the distribution list for this e-newsletter, then please send them the instructions to join the group and let us know their email address.Julie Coleclough For Sale The economical way to go sailing!
