• Activities (9)

We support a diverse range of river based activities at GYC. Please select an appropriate catagory.

    • Cycling (1)

In clement weather we run frequent jaunts along the River Thames towpath with an enthusiastic cycling crowd, stopping at local hostelries for refreshments. Members, check out our Calendar for the next planned trip.

    • Sailing (0)
      • Dinghy (4)

Welcome to GYC's dinghy section. We're lucky enough to have a great piece of water to sail on - broad enough to give us room to race and practise. With enough tall buildings to give us changeable wind - if you can sail here, you can sail anywhere!

We have 9 bosuns and one Laser Stratos. We have an active racing programme with winter and summer series. We also run inter-club team racing. In between, we have some cruises and refresher sessions – these can be a sail up river, down river or just honing your skills in front of the club.

As they are club boats, you cannot just take a boat out when you fancy - if that's what you want to do, then you're welcome to get your own boat!

As it's a busy stretch of the water, we never go on the water without a safety boat. The dinghy section provides safety cover in two boats. So throughout the year, people do a mix of sailing and safety boating. We can arrange for you to be safety trained so that you can help with safety cover. It gives you a different perspective on the river!

We also need race officers for each race. It's a great opportunity to watch how people sail and the tactics they use. Training can be given If you are interested in helping out.

      • Cruiser (1)

Our range of sailing cruisers is diverse, from racing types - Formula 1s, Limbos, Medinas, to long-distance cruisers, so we hold two classes of race to differentiate between the light and heavy displacement boats. We race locally around cans, upriver to Greenwich and Deptford, downriver to Erith, Thurrock and Gravesend, and beyond to Sea Reach and around the Isle of Sheppey.

      • Racing (2)

Yacht and Dinghy racing at GYC

GYC runs a full racing programme for yachts and dinghys.. There is a summer series and a winter series of club racing, and also a number of open races or races organised jointly with the other clubs on this part of the Thames.

A list of the races can be found using the Racing Calendar link on the RH menu list.

We have a quite a number of motor cruising members in GYC with a range of boats from 5m planing craft to 12m cruisers.

Activity is at present organised by individuals as and when they plan trips, both up and down stream.

Enthusiastic new members are always welcome as the philopsophy behind GYC is very much based on member input. If you're free on a Tuesday evening (our Clubnight) why not drop in and sample what we have to offer.

    • Yard (6)

      GYC YARD

Our yard is a members' facility not a commercial yard. As we have limited space we encourage members to make their stay there as short as possible.

To encourage and make quick turnaround more affordable you can apply for a four-week slot which has no charge other than your lift in/out fees - but beware that late stayers (over one month) will be charged at standard yard rates.

If you wish to work on a longer term project (perhaps a major refurbishment or boat construction) that may take more than a year, you can apply to the committee for 'project status'. This requires a project plan to be submitted stipulating what you plan to do and when. Progress will be reviewed periodically.

All boats coming into the yard (whether by river or road) may only do so with the Yardmaster's permission. If as a member you wish to bring your boat into the yard please fill in and submit an application form on line or ask for a paper form. The lift date requested can not be guaranteed until confirmed, at which point it will appear in the 'Confirmed Yard Movements' list at the top of this page. Please make contact with the yard team verbally before the day to avoid confusion.

Every boat-lift application form must be accompanied by a copy of current and sufficient insurance policy (Byelaws 27c)

      Please Remember

The Yard is not a car park. If you plan to leave the premises, please either park your car in our car-park or be sure to drop your car keys in the white post box outside the Harbour Master office. If you leave your car locked-up in the yard please leave a note with a contact number in the window.

Bear in mind that if your vehicle is parked in the yard it may prevent the use of the lifting equipment and make impossible or extremely difficult and time consuming launching or recovering of other members boats.

Please, be considerate and treat fellow members as you would like to be treated.

      Thank you.

    • Moorings (4)

We have drying moorings available, suitable for lifting keel, bilge keel and shallow long keel boats.

Boats requiring deep water moorings please speak to the Harbourmaster or fill in a request form to be put on the waiting list.

      See below for charges.

  • For Sale (1)

Club members may advertise here for free. Please note that acquiring a new boat does not guarantee you a club mooring or yard space - even if the vessel has previously been kept at GYC.

  • Public Home Page (4)

Located halfway between the Millennium Dome and the Thames Barrier GYC is now over 100 years old, founded by a handful of Thames sailors in 1908, and boasts over 400 members. The club caters for cruiser sailors, dinghy sailors and motor-boaters. Sail past Canary Wharf and the beautiful Royal Greenwich up London's historic river or go down to the estuary for the East coast or a channel crossing. Motor cruisers can go right through the very heart of the capital, and have access to the river Lee and inland waterways.
